                "description": "Manichaean (proposed) private letter. Documentary letter on papyrus from Besas to his mother Maria, with a greeting \u2018in God\u2019 followed by a prayer, and a request for a cloak for the Pascha festival. Initially dated to c. 200 by H. I. Bell and considered one of the earliest Christian letters. Identified as Manichaean by Gardner, Nobbs, and Choat in 2000 and redated to the early fourth century.\r\nThe Manichaean identification was made on the basis of stylistic elements in the proem that parallel the letters of the Manichaean community in Kellis: specifically, the prayer addressed to the \u2018God of Truth\u2019 (\u03b8\u03b5\u1ff6\u03b9 \u03c4\u1fc6\u03c2 \u1f00\u03bb\u03b7\u03b8\u03b5\u03af\u03b1\u03c2) and the \u2018Paraclete spirit\u2019 (\u03c0\u03b1\u03c1\u03b1\u03ba\u03bb\u03ae\u03c4\u1ff3 \u03c0\u03bd\u03b5\u03cd\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9) for protection in soul, body and spirit, associated with joy, health, and eternal life, respectively.\u00a0",
