P.Kellis I 24: Official Declaration to the Office of the Dux

The papyrus consists of three separate fragments which contain a mutilated declaration sent by a number of inhabitants of the village of Kellis presumably to an official (name lost) employed in the bureau of the provincial dux of the Thebaid. According to the editor, the reasons for making the declaration seem to be that a certain Hatres had acted out of enmity against one or more fellow-villagers. The subscribers to the document make a statement confirmed by an imperial oath that they are staying aloof from the folly, that they had never heard about this and that they send off this act of surety, in order that a fellow-inhabitant of the village, a certain Gena, who apparently had been bothered by Hatres, will not suffer any further hardship.
In the very fragmentary introduction appears the mention of a "priest of the Catholic church" (l. 3: π̣ρ̣ε̣σβυ̣[τ]έρου καθ[ο]λικῆς ἐκκλησία)ς, whereas the first persons to be named in the list of the numerous subscribers are the priest Aurelius Paminis and the two deacons Pkoureus (?) and Cholos.

The writing runs parallel to the fibers, the back is blank.

",
