Topographic and TLS survey at Shams al-Din (Kharga Oasis)

In February 2020, a joint team of the Ministry of Antiquities and DEChriM, led by Dr Basem Gehad, carried out a complete topographic survey of the site of Shams al-Din, in the south of Kharga Oasis. Planned as a training course for local inspectors from the Kharga inspectorate of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, the field season allowed for a complete DGPS mapping of the site. The clearing of the surface sand on the whole archaeological area permitted also several tests of TLS surveying. The site of Shams al-Din had been briefly examined by Guy Wagner and Jean Gascou, who cleared in 1975 the church of the site as well as two or three adjacent rooms.
