Description

P.Mich. VIII 519: Beginning of a letter

Fragment of a letter of which only the formal opening is preserved.

The letter is addressed "to my lord and beloved father Phamaeis" from "Bes the wine merchant" and starts with greetings to his "mother" Thermouthis and all Phamaeis' household before thanking for the sending of some commodity then the papyrus breaks off.

Recto: at the top of the document, close to the upper edge the Christian cryptogram ΧΜΓ, separated from the beginning of the letter by a blank space of 1 cm. The writing is described as a rather careless cursive of medium size.

Verso: part of the address is preserved.

Dated 4th c. in ed. pr. but Gascou 1994: 46 suggested that, in analogy with other documents presenting Christian symbols and originally dated to 4th c. Karanis, one should rather consider the 5th c. (BL X 125).
