Description

P.Oxy. LVI 3857: Letter of peace for Germania

The top of the sheet, which probably contained the name and title of the sender broke off. The letter addressed to the "beloved brothers and fellow ministers in every locality," recommending "our daughter" Germania who needs help. Use of isopsephy ϙθ (= 99 = amen) before farewell wish and nomina sacra (also contracted "Emmanuel"). Same features as in P.Oxy. VIII 1162.

Recto: The text was hastily written by a practised hand, and runs along the fibres.

Verso is blank.
