Description

P.Oxy. VII 1058, van Haelst 955: Short prayer by Apphouas
Probably used as an amulet, this small papyrus (9.2 x 11.9 cm) contains a prayer for help for its author Apphouas. The formulation at the start Ὁ θ(εὸ)ς τῶν παρακειμένων σταυρῶν (God of Crosses) is not attested elsewhere. Jordan 2001 reads δορλον in lines 3–4, and suggests that line 6 is the beginning of Psalm 90:1, ὀ κατο[ικῶν. Blumell/Wayment 2015 agree with the correction in the last line, but not with the attribution to Psalms. They further see what Jordan reads as a ρ at the end of line 3 as a badly legible correction by the scribe, who rather corrected δολον to δουλον. The unrelated verso seems to have been used to test a stylus, showing only a few single words written in different directions, by a different hand than the recto. Nomen sacrum: θς.
