Description	P.Oxy. LXXVI 5073: Amulet with Mark 1:1-2 This long and narrow papyrus strip (25.2 x 4.5 cm), with roughly 1 cm missing on the right edge, was probably used as an amulet, rolled from left to right. The first line with an invitation to read, inset 6 cm from the left margin and functioning as a title, is followed by the Gospel of Mark 1:1-2 on 4 lines. The opening lines of gospels were popular for amulets, as were the Lord’s Prayer and Psalms. This specific quote could also be magical, invoking the protection of an angel. The ed.pr. considers it to be the first quotation of Mark found at Oxyrhynchus, and Rytel-Andrianik 2014 comments that it seems to be the oldest witness for Mark 1:1–2. Line 2 features the variant ιη(σο)υ του χρ(ιστο)υ, rather than ιησου χριστου. Nomina sacra: ιηυ, χρυ.
