Description

P. Kellis 1 86: Fever Amulet
Inscribed with faded writing, this folded papyrus sheet (16.6 x 12.2 cm) contains angels’ names and magical signs in the margins: ΡΑΦΑΗΛ, ΜΙΧΑΗΛ (left margin) and ΟΥΡΙΗΛ, ΓΑΒΡΙΗΛ (right margin). The ed.pr. remarks on the amulet’s self-description as τελετή (formerly meaning “rite”, now “amulet”), similar to the evolution of the term τέλεσμα (possible precursor to “talisman”).
