Description

P.Oxy. LIX 4003, P.Oxy. 59 4003: Letter from Didymos to Athanasios
The building of a church (εἰς τὴν ἐκ[κ]λησίαν, line 10-11) is the topic of this letter (11 x 28.5 cm), with Didymos giving Athanasios instructions on how to proceed. Addressing him as κυρίῳ μου ἀ[δ]ελφῷ, and using the phrase τὸν ἐπωράνιόν σου θεόν (line 3-4), Didymos asks him to heed his tasks, reminding Athanasios that he is acting ὑπὲρ τῆς ἐμῆς ψυχῆς καὶ τῆς σοῦ (“for the sake of my soul and of yours”, line 31). The verso contains the second half of the letter, in which Didymos requests the records of the proceeding of the Augustal, which he needs for Pelusium. He ends with some reminders of important tasks.

Palaeography; according to the ed.pr., the title praefectus Augustalis was first held by Flavius Eutolmius Tatianus in 367 CE. Mention of Pelusium further indicates the letter may date before the creation of the province Arcadia (founded before 411 CE), when Oxyrhynchus and Pelusium both belonged to the province Augustamnica (founded 341).
