Description

P.Ant. 1 44, SB 24 16204: Letter from Longinus to Hermammon
Broken off at the top left and at the bottom, this sheet (22.8 x 28.2 cm) features the remains of 21 lines. Well-wishes are extended to the recipient, and the desire to receive letters from παρὰ τῆς γλ[υκύ]τητός σου (“your own sweet self”, line 5–6). Writing from Pelusium, Longinus seems to be engaged in the textile trade, asking Hermammon for a specific kind of linen goods. An ἀδελφῷ ἡμ[ῶ]ν Ἀδελφίῳ (line 9–10) is mentioned, as well as Boethus, for whom Rea 1996 newly reads the title ἀνούμερ[ος] (“finance officer”, line 17) rather than πλουμέρι[ος]. From line 15 until the end, a second hand appears. Line 15 reads τὸν θεόν σου, and line 19 contains the phrase τῇ θείᾳ προνοίᾳ. The verso contains the address. Choat 2006 questions whether the document is Christian and lists it as monotheistic.
