| Description | P.Giss. I 55: Letter from one priest to another. The hand is an elegant upright semi-cursive, one of a professional scribe. The text runs along the fibres; very careful layout with eistheseis (l. 2 and in final greetings); use of nomina sacra. Similarities in the phrasing with P.Lond. VI 1925. Final greetings were written by another hand. Verso: address, along the fibres. |

| Dating criteria | Dated 6th c. in ed. pr. but according to Fournet 2008: 307, n. 2, the letter does not belong to the archive of Dioscorus and is palaeographically datable to the end of 4th or 5th c. after the photo. Kim 2011: 111 notes that this letter shows the persistence of the use of the letter structure of the 3rd and 4th c. possibly even in the 5th century; no cross – as would be expected for 5th c. Christian letters. |
