Description

P.Lips. I 28: Deed of Adoption

Complete deed between Teeus, daughter of Paesis, and Silbanos, her son, apotaktikos monk from Areos kome in the Hermopolites nome, according to which Silbanos adopts the ten-year-old son of his elder deceased brother Papnouthis and receives the part of the paternal inheritance which was rightfully due to the deceased. Wipzsycka 2009: 311 notes that this is an important document because it supposes that this monk is able to take care systematically of the boy.

The deed is written in cursive handwriting, running along the fibres, and authenticated by Philosarapis, notary. Whereas Teeus is illiterate and has Aur. Proous, komarch, subscribing for her, Silbanos writes his subscription in his own hand.

Verso: isolated traces of ink.
