Description | SB XXII 15768 The sheet is mutilated on the left and at the bottom, where the lower of the papyrus is missing. According to the ed., the focal point of the document is a settlement that has been reached privately as a result of a dispute that arose between the centurions of the castra of the Small Oasis Fl. Lalachios, on the one hand, and Fl. Lalachos, on the other, along with relatives of Lalachios deceased wife. The dispute concerned the size of a vineyard located in the village Moumpsa (in the small Oasis) that Lalachios inherited from his wife after her death. The concession offered as a settlement of the dispute is introduced by Lalachios by an oath sworn on both God pantokrator and the consul Jovianus. This is the earliest example of an oath by "God the Almighty" on papyrus – later attestations do not seem to come before 412 (P.Haun. III 57). The ed. note (l. 3-4n.) that the centurions were maybe stationed in the kastron Psobtheos in the metropolis of the Small Oasis, although this castra is attested in the sources only from the 5th c. onward. Recto: semi-cursive, very legible hand, running along the fibres. Verso is blank. |
