Description

P.Oxy. LIV 3759: Record of court proceedings in the temple of Kore.

This document, self-standing and complete (except some damage down the right edge), was written on the back of a piece cut from a roll of declarations of prices made to the logistes by various guilds. It contains the proceedings of a case concerning the ownership of some buildings or building-lands, and several other officials had already been involved. The point of interest here is that at the end of the day the logistes is unable to give a decision and postpones the continuation of the proceedings since the next day is "the holy Lord's day" (kuriakes hieras): this is the earliest use of the word in this sense in the papyri.

Since 321 and the edict of Constantine, judges, the urban populace and businesses in all trades had to rest on the venerabili die solis (Cod. Just. 3.12.2(3)), see Llewelyn and Nobbs 2002.

The text is written across the fibres (transversa charta).
