Description | Effland 1999: 54-55 – Funerary inscription for Pabekis Inscription located on the outside, directly above the entrance to a tomb, in the necropolis of Naǧʿ al-Ḥiṣṣiyya, which is filled almost to the ceiling with sand. The text is located asymmetrically on both sides of the tomb opening. It reads: "Pabekis son of Pachomios son of Apollonios". Centrally, above the opening, at a distance of four lines height from the above-mentioned inscription, lies a crux ansata. It has the shape typical in Christian monuments. According to the ed., one can certainly assume from the craftsmanship that both the Christian symbol and the inscription were placed there at the same time: a man who came from a Graeco-Egyptian milieu (onomastics) and had converted to Christianity rested in this tomb. Exact dating is not possible, but the ed. suggests 3rd/4th c. |
