Description

IGChrEg 39, CGC 8354: Funerary Epitaph for Achillas
The funerary inscription ΤΥΒΙ ΚΑ ΕΚΟΙΜΗΘΗ ΑΧΙΛΛΑϹ, indicates Tybi 21st as the death day of the deceased named Achillas. The ed.pr. and others have argued for the possibility that this individual could be Achillas, 18th Patriarch of Alexandria, successor to Peter of Alexandria. He died six months after his appointment. Line 4 (initially not mentioned by Néroutsos 1887 and illegible for Crum 1902) was identified by Schmidt 1903 as being the remnant of an earlier inscription, written on its head in relation to the new inscription.
