Description

O. Sabil 5: Receipt for two chickens 
This ostracon (7 x 7 cm) contains a receipt for two chickens paid by Tithoes, dated to the 6th indiction and signed by Gaius. The mentioned location Pmoun Berri Borinou is known from P.Kellis 1 5. Most texts in the archive of Tithoes son of Pantonymos are receipts and orders to pay for chicken, oil and dates. The present document (alongside O. Sabil 10) identifies the central Tithoes of the archive as a διάκονος.

Dating criteria

Site dating; objects and coins found on site support dating the remains of ʿAyn al-Sabīl to the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th c. CE. The dating to a 6th indiction prompts the ed.pr. to propose the years 317/318, 332/333, 347/348, or 362/363, with the last being considered the most likely.

Archaeological context

Discovered in the 2009–2011 excavations by the Islamic and Coptic Inspectorate of Antiquities for the Dakhla Oasis at ʿAyn al-Sabīl. Two archives were uncovered at the site, that of the deacon Tithoes son of Pantonymos (TM Arch ID 683) found in a house adjacent to a 4th c. church, and in the 2019 excavations that of Taa son of Pebos (TM Arch ID 684).
