Description | P.Oxy. LXXXII 5290 Tall fragment from a papyrus folio containing parts of the Book of Jannes and Jambres. The text is written in Biblical Majuscule and the fragment preserves the original folio height of 18 lines. The text has preserved apostrophes (l. 5 and 6, verso) as well as several diaereses in l. 4 and 9 (verso). The first 8 lines of the verso (contextually preceding the recto) coincide with l. 12-16 of P.Chester Beatty inv. XVI 5a+; see ed. pr. The apocryphal text features the magician Jannes’s dialogue with his mother as he is entrenched in flames (l. 5-6), before the final repentance. The Book of Jannes and Jambres is attested in four other witnesses, most extensively in P.Chester Beatty inv. XVI (TM 64400); see Pietersma 2015. |
