Description

Nag Hammadi Codex VII

Papyrus codex containing a variety of Gnostic texts in Coptic (Sahidic dialect), said to have been discovered along with 12 other codices in an area near Nag Hammadi, although the precise context and circumstance of their discovery in 1945 remains unclear (Nongbri 2018: 108-115). The contents of Nag Hammadi Codex VII include: pp. A-B: front flyleaf, blank;

• p. 1-49 (NHC VII,1): Paraphrasis Sem (Paraphrase of Sem; CC 0686), with initial title on p. 1;
• p. 49-70 (NHC VII,2): Logos Seth (Second Treatise of the Great Seth; CC 0676), with final title on p. 70;
• p. 70-84 (NHC VII,3): Apocalypsis Petri (Apocalypse of Peter; CC 0647), with initial title on p. 70 and final title on p. 84;
• p. 84-118 (NHC VII,4): Doctrina Silvani (Teachings of Silvanus; CC 0656), with initial title on p. 84; il testo finisce con due righe definite come un colofone (Janssens 1983, p. 3 and Pearson 1996, p. 257);
• p. 118-127 (NHC VII,5): Stelae Seth (Three Steles of Seth; CC 0681), with initial title on p. 118 and section titles on p. 121 (final title of the first section and initial title of the second section), on p. 124 (final title of the second section and initial title of the third section) and on p. 127 (final title of the third section);
• p. 128 (also paginated C): blank.

Waste papyri recovered from the cartonnage of Codex VII include a deed dated 348 (PNH 65) which provides a terminus a quo for the cover of the codex.
