Description | P.Oxy. VIII 1133: Receipt Receipt for the price of some fruit sold by Iohannes son of Sarmates, fruit-gardener living at the village of Nesus Limenius, to Aur. Artemidorus son of Calopus, fruit-seller in the city of Oxyrhynchos. An acknowledgement of debt had previously been made by the latter at the time of the sale, but this could not now be found and handed back to him, and therefore the present document (apoche) was drawn up releasing him from further obligations in the matter. After the signature of Iohannes written by his hypographeus is a notarial subscription followed by a staurogram (Diethart and Worp 1986: 77 = BL VIII 241) – one of the earliest securely dated documents showing a Christian symbol in a legal text. Verso: title of the document. |
