P.NYU 8: Receipt

Receipt for delivery of wheat at the port of Karanis for the 2nd indiction.

The receipt starts with the Christian cryptogram ΧΜΓ written at the top of it. The text is written in an upright, unusually skilled and careful hand. Broken after line 6.

Dating criteria

Dated 328/329 or 343/344 in ed. pr. (see also Bagnall 1970: 70 favouring 343/344). However, Gascou 1994: 46 suggested pushing the date to the 5th c. (palaeographical comparison with P.Mert. II 94 dated 5th c. and reference to the observation made by Sijpesteijn 1986: 118.
