Description

P. Kellis 1 88: Christian Amulet
The holes were bored into the tablet (23.8 x 9.8 cm) after the author wrote onto the board. Side A contains a liturgical prayer containing the terms δεσπότας (line 2), θ(εὸ)ς αἰώνιος (line 3) and κ(υρίο)υ (line 4). An earlier text had occupied Side A before the prayer, but was washed away. Side B used to contain writing, which is now illegible. While the tablet may have been used as an amulet, containing a healing prayer, the holes and other markings indicate its use as the board of a notebook (?). Römer/Daniel/Worp 1997 see similarities to P. Barc. 155, and consider it may have been part of a liturgical collection. It is unclear whether the inhabitants of House 3 were Christian or Manichaean, and therefore the context of this prayer could fit either. Nomina sacra: θς, κυ
