Description

P.Oxy. LVI 3859, P.Oxy. 56 3859: Letter from Horigenes to Sarapammon
Two sheets joined together (32.5 x 26.5 cm) form this two-column letter. In column 1, Horigenes recounts his misfortune of having been detained by a soldier, as well as another occurrence (here the papyrus is broken off), which have impeded Horigenes from visiting Sarapammon at Oxyrhynchus twice. Column 2 consists entirely of greetings, and a number of familial terms (father, mother, brother, sister), for more than 38 individuals (the number of children greeted is not definite). Horigenes uses the phrase μετὰ τὸν θεὸν (line 10), and addresses Sarapammon as κύριέ μου ἄδελφε (line 53).
