Description

P.Oxy. XLVI 3314, P.Oxy. 46 3314: Letter from Ioudas to Ioses and Maria
Writing to his father and wife, the author of this letter (14.5 x 21.5 cm) has been injured in a riding accident, laying almost immobile in Babylon. He sends well-wishes with the phrase εὔχομαι τῇ θ[ε]ία προνοίᾳ (line 3) and addresses his wife as κυρία μου ἀδελφή (line 5-6). Asking his wife to come get him together with her brother, because he cannot find a boat to travel back to Oxyrhynchus, he also directs her to Isaak, the κολοβόν in case she is in need of money. A second hand has written the farewell. It still remains a matter of debate whether the family in question was Jewish or Christian, see Epp 2006 and Blumell 2012. Line 10-11, the mention of a “cup of water” (ποτηρίου ὕδατ[ο]ς), is seen as an allusion to Mark 9:41.
