Description

P.Oxy. XLVIII 3417, P.Oxy. 48 3417: Letter from Maximus to Papnouthis and Dorotheos
This reproachful letter (10 x 25.5 cm) directed at the brothers (κυρίοις μου ἀδελφοῖς, line 1) Papnouthis and Dorotheos chides them for letting the writer Maximus be bothered daily by τὸν ἀδελφὸν ἡμῶν Ammonios. The two recipients appear to owe Ammonios money, which Maximus has been paying interest for since 3 years. He appeals to their shame and threatens to come to Oxyrhynchus to collect the amount from them in one go himself, should Ammonios approach him again. Use of the phrases διὰ τὸν Θεὼν (line 9), μὰ τὴν γὰρ θίαν πρόνοια(ν) (line 16-17) and παρὰ Θεῷ (line 26-27). The verso (P.Oxy. 48 3422) identifies Maximus as headman of the village Leukiou. He can likely be seen as the same Maximus from P.Oxy. XLVIII 3428 and 3419.
