Description

P. Oslo inv. 1647, SB 14 12021: Sale of a house
This middle top part (22.3 x 15.9 cm) of a sheet contains the sale contract for a house. Less than half of the original width remains, an especially significant section is missing on the left. The top border might be preserved. Line 2 mentions an ἀναγνώστῃ καθολικῆς ἐκκλησίας (“reader of the Catholic church”), and line 4 reconstructs the beginning of the term [μο]νάζοντος (“monk”). Names mentioned include Aurelius, Ioannes, Dorus, Dionysios, Merobaudes, Serena and Sarapammon. A second hand appears on the last two lines, possibly part of the signatures. The closest, nearly contemporary parallels to this type of contract are PSI 12 1239 (18.09.430 CE) and Stud. Pal. 20 110 (5th c.).

The ed.pr. palaeographically placed the text in the 4th/5th c., comparing the writing to PSI 12 1265 (27.12.426 CE) and Stud. Pal. 20 110 (5th c.). SB 14 then identified the reference to consul Flavius Merobaudes and Phamenoth 25 in line 5 (Μερ]υβαύδου τοῦ λαμπρο(τάτου) ἐν μηνὶ Φαμενὼθ κε̣), dating it shortly after March 21, 377 CE.
