O.Douch IV 385: List of guards.

List bearing the names of the "guardians of the gates of the great gate". First, the soldiers (stratiotai) and then civilians (paganoi). Among soldiers, some names are suggestive of Christianity, like the theophoric Papnouthes or biblical Esaï, whereas among the paganoi, there is one Samouel. See also O.Douch IV 384.

Palaeography, content and archaeological context.

O.Douch IV 358-390 are dated in the late 4th c. or early 5th c. in ed. pr. (Wagner 1999: viii); see also Carrié 2004: 263 who suggests that the core of the Dūš ostraca were written between 385 and 420.
