Description | Seal impression. Probably made of tin, or an alloy, and fiber scraps, cast and then embossed. The rectangular seal features a sort of family portrait containing two profile busts facing each other, with a cross between them and, underneath it, a child. The bearded figure on the left is the father, while the mother, represented to the right, has plaited hair. The cross indicates the Christian belonging of the family. The convex back of the impression indicates that it was not attached to a flat object. Fiber remains on the back suggest that the impression comes from a textile cloth that was placed over a vessel. The liquid metal was poured onto it, a band was placed in it to close and the seal was then pressed in. The impression does not provide any indication as to the contents of the sealed vessel, but rather marked its ownership. Whether the impression was made in Egypt or it arrived there as a kind of travel souvenir cannot be ascertained. |
