Description

P.Oxy. LXXIII 4965: Manichaean letter from Ammonius and his brethern to Philadelphus.
Ammonius asks Philadelphus to receive his brother Nilus, who probably delivers alms to Ammonius and his brethern. In the second part of the letter, Ammonius and his community greet Philadelphus and "all the elects and catechumens" (πάντας ἐκλεκτούς τε καὶ κατηχουμένους) who are with him.

Mentions to the "Paracletic mind" (παρακλητικὸς λόγος, l. 10), the eclecti (ἐκλεκτοί), auditores (κατηχούμενοι) and the "holy brothers" (ἀδελφοὶ ἅγιοι, l. 15), as well as the "teacher" (διδασκάλος, l. 30-31), who could be a Manichaean Church official, leave no doubt as to the Manichaean character of the document. P.Oxy. LXXIII 4965 is thus one of the very few documents witnessing the existence of a Manichaean community at Oxyrhynchos.
