Description | P.Oxy. LXXIII 4965: Manichaean letter from Ammonius and his brethern to Philadelphus. Mentions to the "Paracletic mind" (παρακλητικὸς λόγος, l. 10), the eclecti (ἐκλεκτοί), auditores (κατηχούμενοι) and the "holy brothers" (ἀδελφοὶ ἅγιοι, l. 15), as well as the "teacher" (διδασκάλος, l. 30-31), who could be a Manichaean Church official, leave no doubt as to the Manichaean character of the document. P.Oxy. LXXIII 4965 is thus one of the very few documents witnessing the existence of a Manichaean community at Oxyrhynchos. |
