| Description | P.Cair.Isid. 75; SB VI 9184: Petition Petition submitted by Isidorus, son of Ptolemaeus, to Aurelius Gerontius, praepositus of the fifth pagus of the Arsinoite nome. He complains that although he is occupied with the cultivation of the land he owns and is not involved with any persons in the village but keeps to himself (κατʼ ἐμαυτὸν ἀ̣ν̣α̣χ̣ωροῦντος), on the previous day, when he was working in the fields, six of his drunk fellow villagers broke into his house and smashed his furniture. Cadell 1974: 68 notes that the use of the verb ἀναχωρέω here testifies to the evolution of its meaning in parallel with the appearance of the word ἀναχωρήτης during 4th c. (see P.Herm 7 and P.Herm. 10). The ed. refers to Athanasius, Life of St. Antony, 45 for the same expression. |
