Description | I.Wadi Haggag 242: Acclamation. The editor suggests that this inscription is Jewish as he would rather see a menorah in the palm branch l. 2 (see discussion – Negev 1977: 64). There is also a puzzling sequence of letters at the end of l. 1: he suggests reading the Greek letters from right to left θ(εὸς) Ὕ(ψιστος), with dalet letter in the middle for the beginning of "One" – but specifies that this shortened form has never been used before. Lajtar 1992 suggests rather reading the numeral 499 (ΥϘΘ), which is an isopsephy for Εἷς θεός, and has no doubt about the Christian character of this inscription. |
