Description

P.Oxy. XXXIV 2731, P.Oxy. 34 2731: Letter from Maximus to Zenobia
This nearly intact sheet (18.8 x 26.9 cm) contains a personal letter from a soldier Maximus to his mother-in-law (?) Zenobia, addressed as τῇ κυρίᾳ μου μητρὶ (line 1) and greeted ἐν κ(υρί)ῳ θ(ε)ῷ (line 2). He asks her to relay greetings to his wife Salamaei and to the brothers (ἐμοῦ τοὺς ἀδελφούς, line 8-9), also from his mother Rufina. Maximus reiterates his demand that his wife Salamaei be sent to him, a request which has not been heeded multiple times. He himself cannot leave his current location because his superior, the praepositus, is not letting anyone go.
