Description

P.Oxy. XLIX 3479, P.Oxy. 49 3479: Deed of Surety
Three hands are found on this document (11.6 x 24.5 cm), addressed to the praepositus pagi Aurelius Achilles. After line 1 and the first part of the word Αὐρηλί- on line 2, the hand of what is presumably the main guarantor Aurelius Cheos son of Strouthos writes until line 19, before his son Aurelius Syrion son of Cheos signs the last three lines. They are from the village Syron and stand surety for Aurelius Apollos, described as a πρεσβύτερος τῆς [α]ὐτῆς κώμης (line 8), which could indicate either a village elder or a Christian priest. They swear by τῷ θείῳ ὅρκῳ (line 15). The letter is dated to the consulate of Flavius Taurus and Flavius Eusebius, which the ed.pr. assumes could indicate the year 361 CE, when Julian acceded to sole Emperor.
