Description

P.Oxy. LXXXIII 5347; Gregory-Aland P139; Gregory-Aland 𝔓139

A small fragment containing Paulus Letter to Philemon 6-8 and 18-20, overlapping slightly with P61 (7th c., verses 4-7). The text can be supplemented by P87 (3rd c.), containing verses 13-15 and 24-25.

The text probably belonged to a two-column codex of a format (and script) comparable to P.Chester Beatty IV; see ed. pr. The hand is formal, and the script is written in the Biblical Majuscule with consistent shading. It presents stops and diaereses (l. 5, recto and verso), breathings and accentuation (l. 5 and 10, recto) as well as a forked paragraphos (l. 8, verso); see ed. pr. One can infer from l. 4 that the scribe probably did not write iota adscript, and there occur also supralinear corrections (l. 6, verso) as well as two-letter nomina sacra for Χριϲτός (l. 2, [9], recto, and perhaps also in l. 9 (verso) post correction if we consider a possible parablepsis after l. 8 ον[αιμην); see ed. pr.
